Light Air, Big Shifts, and Tight Racing on Lake Geneva

Read for the recap of the Melges 19 Summer Regatta hosted at Lake Geneva Yacht Club.

This past weekend, the Melges 19 fleet headed to Lake Geneva, WI for three days of racing. Over the course of the weekend, six races were completed in a wide range of conditions.

Friday delivered classic Lake Geneva conditions with a shifty, puffy southwest breeze ranging from 8–15 knots. The fleet completed three races before gathering for a post-racing debrief. Discussion topics included rig tuning, jib setup, and downwind board height, with sailors comparing notes on what was working best throughout the changing conditions.

Saturday brought sunshine and warm temperatures, but unfortunately no wind. After a patient wait on shore and on the water, racing was called for the day at 1:00 PM.

The final day of racing delivered a steady easterly breeze in the 12–15 knot range. While pressure was more consistent, sailors still had to stay active, with lulls requiring frequent gear changes and shifting angles creating passing opportunities throughout the course. Chris Stocke and team delivered a strong performance, scoring three race wins and discarding a second-place finish to secure the overall regatta victory.

Beyond the results, the weekend highlighted what makes the Melges 19 such an enjoyable boat to sail. Sailors were treated to plenty of exciting downwind legs, and the fleet remained remarkably close together throughout much of the racing. The tight competition kept every race interesting and rewarded smart tactical decisions.

The varying conditions also demonstrated the versatility of the Melges 19. While many teams were set up for the stronger breeze expected over the weekend, the boat transitioned smoothly into the lighter conditions without feeling sticky or difficult to maneuver, allowing sailors to remain competitive across a wide range of wind strengths.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the Lake Geneva Summer Regatta a success. We look forward to seeing the fleet back on the water again soon.
